Attendance Policy

Regular attendance and classroom participation are essential to a good education. If a student does not attend class and has not received teacher approval to be working elsewhere, the absence is considered a cut. It is the responsibility of the parent to verify all absences. Verification must be made for individual periods prior to leaving.

Please adhere to the following procedure to verify an absence:

1. Call Attendance Office on morning of absence to verify that day’s absence.
2. Give the Date and Periods absent.
3. Give students first and last name.
4. Give reason for absence
5. Give identification of the caller
* Student must come by Attendance Office and sign out.

All Absences Must Be Cleared Within 48 Hours of Return To School.

Students leaving during the school day must have parent/guardian approval prior to leaving. Students must sign out with an attendance secretary and receive a pass to leave campus. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a cut from class.

Home Teaching: Is available for extended illness. Contact the attendance secretary to sign-up.

Illegal Absences/ Cuts

1. Cutting/leaving w/out permission.
2. Failure to sign in or out of school.
3. Failure to clear absence within 48 hours of returning to school.
4. No make-up of class work allowed.


Legal Absences

1. Illness
2. Medical Appointments
3. Funeral Services (immediate family)
4. Approved School-Related Activities
5. Court Appearances
6. Observation of Religious Holiday
7. Employment Conference requested by a parent/guardian.
8. Family Emergency
9. Pre-Informed Absences

Unexcused Absences

1. Personal (trips, car trouble, etc.)

Pre-Informed Absences

Trips, college visits, or other anticipated absences require a pre-informed contract signed by the parent and teachers and returned to the attendance office. Independent Study is not available for more than ten consecutive school days without approval from an administrator. Independent study contracts must be given to the teacher 4 to 5 days prior to a planned absence of 5 or more days and 5 days prior to a planned absence of 10 or more days. The rules of the contract must be followed or no credit will be given and the days absent will be unexcused. This could affect the semester grade.

Appeal: A class dropped due to attendance may be appealed within 48 hours of the drop. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 5 classes to remain at Monte Vista.

THE ADMINISTRATION WILL ALLOW ONE (1) PROCEDURAL CLEARANCE PER YEAR.


Tardy Policy (per semester)

Students are expected to be present in the classroom when the bell rings. An unexcused tardy is defined as being late to class without written notification from a staff member and/or parent. Students must clear tardies with the teacher within 48 hours of the infraction. Clearance will be based upon the individual teacher’s class policy.

Work Detail

Work detail is held before school, during lunch or after school daily. Failure to satisfactorily complete work detail will result in further disciplinary action

Saturday School Hours:
9:00 - 12:00

Parents will be notified if a student is assigned to Saturday School. Students who attend Saturday School must bring school work to complete during their detention and be prepared to assist with campus beautification.
