English 11 is a college preparatory language arts course, in which students will study traditional and contemporary works drawn from American and World Literature. Material will include novels, plays, short stories, essays, and poetry. Students will be expected to participate actively in small groups, class discussions, and oral reports while examining literary themes, forms, styles, and techniques. Writing assignments will be both expressive and analytical, and focus on the critical analysis of literature. Vocabulary work and instruction in grammar and usage are included as needed. Students should expect a considerable amount of homework and challenging reading and writing assignments.
