English 11 Honors
U.C. and State University Certified
(11)
Year
Prerequisites: Must take English department test screening and have
teacher recommendation.
All students interested in this course should sign-up for English 11. Following
the screening test, counselors will place students into Honors English.
Students study intensively a central core of works that embody significant
cultural and personal concerns. They also participate in an extensive enrichment
reading program that emphasizes reading as essential to one's
ability to think and write. The course is literature-based: while intensive and
extensive reading and discussion are emphasized, students write frequently
about the social issues and human values found in the works read. They
write to discover their own meanings and styles, in a variety of forms, with
emphasis on the process of writing. They experience both writing timed
essays as preparation for the Advanced Placement Examination in English
Language and Composition and writing to the highest degree possible of
development and polish for assignments that may take days or even weeks
to complete. Prior to the beginning of the course, students may be expected
to complete summer reading and/or written assignments.
