All students interested in this course should sign-up for English 12. Following the screening test, students will be placed into AP English by counselors.

Prerequisites: Must pass English department screening and have teacher recommendation.
Advanced Placement English requires the study and practice of writing about literature with sensitivity and discrimination, using various forms. Students are engaged in the critical reading and analysis of literature. They study the individual work: its structure, meaning, and value. They produce numerous and extensive structured compositions in response to their reading. In preparation for the Advanced Placement Examination in English Composition and Literature, students study intensively in a few representative works from several genres and periods: these works are challenging and of recognized literary merit, worthy of careful scrutiny because they are complex and rich in thought and language. Prior to the beginning of the course, students may be expected to complete summer reading and/or written assignments.
