French 1
U.C. and State University Certified Year Fall 9-12. An introductory course in
French language and conversation, this class also integrates culture, songs, and
games into the curriculum. The discipline needed in mastering a Foreign Language
is instilled through daily assignments and frequent testing. This is a grammar
course, concentrating on listening, speaking, and writing French.
French 2
U.C. and State University Certified Year Fall 9-12. Prerequisite: C or better in
French 1. A continuation course in the study of the French language, using all
four basic skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. More emphasis on
verb tenses, and increased activities in speaking and listening comprehension.
French 3
U.C. and State University Certified Year Fall 10-12. Prerequisite: C or better
in French 2. This intermediate level course emphasizes the grammatical structure
of the language. Students master irregular verbs, the formation and use of 6
verb tenses, pronouns and adjectives. Students expand their vocabulary by
reading stories, learning songs, creating original oral and written work and
watching French films. Good work habits are important as there are daily
homework assignments and frequent quizzes. French culture is understood in the
process of learning the language.
French 4 Honors
U.C. and State University Certified Year Fall 11-12. Prerequisite: B- or better
in French 3. Now is the time to assimilate all basic grammar and work on
fluency. This course is conducted completely in French, and students are
required to write and perform their own commercials, debates, and oral reports.
Reading and writing skills are strengthened by exposure to French literature, at
least one novel, and many short stories. Fine points of grammar are taught, and
listening comprehension through songs and tapes continues to be a major emphasis
of this course.
AP French
U.C. and State University Certified Year Fall 11-12. Prerequisite: B- or better
in French 4. Students will review all basic grammar. They will read materials
from many sources (short stories, plays, excerpts from novels, magazine
articles) to increase vocabulary, communication skills and knowledge of French
culture and civilization. French cinema, songs and cultural activities will also
be used to increase these skills. Preparation for the AP exam in May is on-going
throughout the year. This consists of grammar tests, composition writing, oral
comprehension practice and oral expression drills. A love of French is a
prerequisite for this course.
