Below is a list of the P.E. classes offered at Monte Vista, along with course descriptions.

P.E. 9

Year
A required class for all 9th grade students. A basic introduction and orientation to high school physical education. Freshman may take Dance or Pre- Dance to fulfill this requirement.

P.E. 10/12 TEAM SPORTS
(10-12)
Semester/Year
Open to all students other than 9th grade students. Course activities include volleyball, tennis, badminton, flag football, basketball, softball, street hockey, track and field, lacrosse, indoor soccer, swimming, aerobic conditioning and assorted fitness activities. This course may be taken more than once.

BADMINTON
(10-12)
Semester/Year
This course is open to all students other than 9th grade students. Students will have an opportunity to improve their badminton skills and knowledge in this class. Due to student interest and large class size, students will play each other in doubles competition. Students should be in good enough physical condition to play non-stop for an entire class period. Students will also have to provide their own rackets and birds. Each student is respons ible for a class project. This course may be repeated.

BASKETBALL

Semester/Year
This class will include individual ball-handling drills, defensive drills, offensive drills and shooting drills. There will also be 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3 tournaments and 5 on 5 games.

BASEBALL

Year
This class is designed to develop both the individual and team fundamentals required to be successful in baseball. Included will be defensive techniques at every position, hitting fundamentals, base running and pitching. The class will also be structured to improve both cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, speed and quickness.

LAP SWIMMING FOR FITNESS
(9-12)
Semester /Year
Prerequisite: Swim 200 yards and float or tread water for 10 minutes. To be assessed the first day in the pool.
This course is open to all students. Freshmen MAY NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN LIEU OF FRESHMEN P.E. 9. This course is designed to offer the opportunity for students to increase and maintain their fitness levels through swimming. This is NOT a class to learn to swim. Students should be comfortable in the water and able to swim continuously, using recognized strokes for a minimum of 30 minutes.

DANCE 1

Prerequisite: Audition and teacher approval
This is a two-semester course. The course consists of group and individual choreography, technique classes, performing, and physical fitness testing. The student will receive physical education credits. The students audition for the class in May of their eighth grade year. Students will be judged upon their dance ability, enthusiasm, and general attitude. Students will be asked to perform a 2-minute dance of original choreography during their first week of school. Freshmen will perform in the November dance show, Freshmen folk dance show in December, Freshmen dance show in March, and the May dance show.

DANCE 2 - 5
U.C.Certified ‘F’ Requirements and State University Certified (Dance 2 Pending)

Prerequisite: Audition and teacher approval.
Dance is an elective class offered to students from grades 10-12. Students interested in Dance will be ability grouped by auditioning. Auditions will be held at the end of May. Students will be taught a routine appropriate for their particular level: Intermediate, Intermediate II, Advanced Intermediate, and Advanced. Dance is a year course. Students may elect to receive P.E. or Fine Arts credits. The course content consists of solo studies, group studies, technique classes and learning dance combinations. There will be two performances in November and May.

CONDITIONING

This class consists of daily aerobic conditioning and/or body sculpting exercises aimed to enhance each student's health (toning, weight loss, i ncreased cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and strength). Each student is required to bring aerobic shoes, a water bottle and a towel.

P.E. (10-12) - WEIGHTS

Semester or Year
This class is designed for students who wish to improve their strength and physical condition through a weight lifting and running program. Students are required to complete a minimum of 15 sets of required exercises 4 days a week and complete a distance run on one day of each week.

P.E.9 - FOOTBALL/WEIGHTS EMPHASIS

This is a freshmen PE class designed for football players. This class has a heavy emphasis on weightlifting and strenuous running. Core activities are offered in addition to conditioning. Due to the large size of this class other freshmen athletes may not take this class.

FOOTBALL CONDITIONING WEIGHTS JV/V

This is an advanced conditioning program designed to meet the needs of the Varsity and JV football players.
