Below is a list of the Applied Arts & Technology classes offered at Monte Vista, along with course descriptions.

Courses in this section may meet Science, Fine Arts, Technology and/or Elective credit requirements.
Some of the following courses are ROP courses, which require students to be 16 years old by the first day of class or in 11th or 12th grade.

ROP AUTO TECHNOLOGY
(11-12)

10th graders may take this course if they are 16 by the first day of class.
This ROP course includes the study, diagnosis and repair of engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, brakes, wheel alignment and front ends, emission control service and computer controls. Students must complete required classroom and laboratory objectives. It is recommended that students who are looking for consumer/operator knowledge enroll for a one hour block while students who are seeking career/professional knowledge enroll in a two or three hour block.

CULINARY ARTS 1 (ROP CULINARY CAREERS FOR 11-12)

The Monte Vista Culinary Academy offers hands-on training in Food Preparation and Catering. Students are taught in a “State of the Art” professional kitchen/classroom by a Culinary Institute of America, New York graduate. Students are prepared for employment in the hospitality industry, as well as entrance into college programs with a Hotel/Restaurant & Culinary Arts focus. Students will learn food safety and sanitation, basic cooking techniques, culinary terminology and how to use professional cooking equipment.

CULINARY ARTS 2
(10-12)

Prerequisite: Completion of Culinary Arts 1
Students will learn to master their knife skills, kitchen organizational abilities and leadership skills. They will learn about menu planning and preparing complete meals. Students will continue learning and focusing on food safety and sanitation.

ROP CAREERS WITH CHILDREN
(11-12)

10th graders may take this course if they are 16 by the first day of class.
This ROP course prepares students for employment as teachers in the field of child care. Training includes working with preschool children in wellequipped nursery schools, and in local child care centers. Instruction includes child development, child health, safety, nutrition, parent-child relationships and preschool operations. California State Law SB1331 allows students who complete the Child Development Occupations Program and earn a certificate to be eligible for hire as a pre-school teac her when they are 18 years old. Articulation with Diablo Valley College.

TV PRODUCTION
(all grades)

In this course, students acquire the visual arts skills and technical know -how to produce content for television broadcast. Students begin immediately learning various broadcasting skills as they produce the daily TV bulletin for school wide broadcast. Meanwhile, they practice reporting, shooting and editing news segments in the field, and use those stories as part of school news programs and talk show s filmed in the studio. Student teams also produce public service announcements as well as action, comedy shorts and more.

THE ART OF VIDEO PRODUCTION (ROP)

10th graders may take this course if they are 16 by the first day of class.
In this course, students acquire the visual arts skills and technical know -how to create their own video productions. The course begins with a comparison of the mediums of film, television and video. Students learn the basic skills to produce video, and then take an in-depth look at the nature of video communication. After exploring aspects of pre-production such as script-writing, students learn more complex skills associated with camera-work, lighting, and sound. Finally, they study the arts of directing and editing while producing a variety of projects for the teacher, themselves and the school.

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS ECONOMICS (ROP)

This survey course provides an introduction to the study of the modern bus iness enterprise. Included will be an examination of the role of business in a market economy; the evolution, formation, and management of American and international operations; the financial, legal, and environmental issues affecting business decisions; the use of information and technology in bus iness decision-making; and the part marketing plays in developing, pricing, promoting and distributing products.
