Coffee with Kevin Wednesday May 17th at 8:30am in 118

Dear Monte Vista Parents and Guardians: The last Coffee with Kevin is Wednesday, May 17th at 8:30am in Room 118 of the Workday Student Center.  This new program has been very well received and has educated parents about the school while creating a forum for discussion on issues relevant to parents of high school students.  Don't miss the last coffee of the year!

One need identified during these coffees is the desire for more Parent Education. The PTA offered a few events starting with the screening of the movie, "Screenagers" followed by "Race to Nowhere", after which the creator of the film signed her book Beyond Measure.  She also spoke at length about the stressors our students experience, and the steps to take as parents, together with our school, to create an environment best suited for their growth and learning.  In September 2017, the PTA will screen the movie, "Beyond Measure", the sequel to "Race to Nowhere", and will start a Parent Book Club to read the accompanying book, and then participate in discussion during the last half hour of the monthly coffee.   We will read and discuss two chapters per month, and the schedule will be outlined as the program begins.

In the meantime, Dr. Ahern suggests that we read an important book over summer, titled How to Raise an Adult.  He would like to take time at the end of the September Coffee to discuss our feelings about the book, and how he will support our students within these concepts.  Our local bookstore, Rakestraw Books, in Danville, is offering this book for sale. Please say you are from Monte Vista!

The PTA would like to thank Principal Ahern for his forward thinking approach and for engaging us as parents in the process of raising the best children we can.

Janet Nunan, VP of MVHS PTA
