SRVUSD cancels all indoor and outdoor athletic activities through Monday

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

The smoke and the haze that is affecting the San Ramon Valley right now is being blown this direction from fires in Butte County and Grass Valley. Due to the poor air quality and extreme heat predicated today through Monday, all SRVUSD outdoor activities including P.E. were moved indoors today and will moved inside again tomorrow.

In addition, to ensure the safety of our students, coaches, parents and community supporters, due to the extreme heat conditions and poor air quality, all indoor and outdoor SRVUSD middle and high school athletic activities, including all home, neutral and away practices and competitions, are cancelled starting today through Monday, September 4. This includes all CIF fall sports: cross country, tennis, football, water polo, golf and volleyball.

  • In addition to our fall middle and high school sports, this cancellation applies to extracurricular and co-curricular activities involving marching band, cheerleading, color guard, pom and dance teams starting today through Monday.

  • The only exception to this directive is that coaches or directors may meet with students in a classroom as long as the meeting does not include any physical exertion.

With poor air quality and temperatures predicted to rise to 111 degrees in the coming days, fields, courts, pool decks, golf courses and trails will rise to even higher temperatures. In addition, many indoor sporting facilities are not air-conditioned.

Our goal is to ensure the safety of our students, staff, parents and community. This decision was made with the full support of the North Coast Section Commissioner, Gil Lemmon. We have also been in communication with San Ramon Valley Fire District Chief and are monitoring the air quality.

Thank you,

Elizabeth Graswich

Director, Communications and Community Relations
