Superintendent Notes

Dear San Ramon Valley Unified School District Staff and Families,

Our hearts go out to the families, friends and colleagues who lost loved ones in the devastating shooting at a Florida school this week. In light of this most recent event, I want to reassure you that the safety and well-being of our students, staff and families are a top priority for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District has a comprehensive district-wide emergency preparedness plan in place. Every SRVUSD school has a safety plan that is specific to that school site. These Comprehensive School Site Safety Plans are approved by the School Site Councils. The plans are kept on file at each site and at the district office.

To ensure safety on a daily basis, our schools regularly review safety procedures with our students and staff, we conduct drills and have a strong partnership with our local law enforcement and fire district. Through these relationships, we continue to review and improve our emergency plans.  These relationships strengthen the safety and security of our schools.

It is crucial that we as a community continue to be aware of our surroundings and report any concerns of suspicious behavior to local law enforcement, a trusted adult or through the SRVUSD Report a Concern Form. If you have a site specific concern about campus safety please reach out to the school’s site principal. Please help us share the message that “if you see something, or know something, say something.

As always, counseling, mental health services and other assistance are available to any student, parent, or staff member who is seeking support. The National Association of School Psychologists provides the following tips for talking with students about violence:

·         Reassure children that they are safe.

·         Make time to talk.

·         Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate.

·         Review safety procedures.

·         Observe children’s emotional state.

·         Limit television viewing of these events.

·         Maintain a normal routine.

We hope you have a restful, relaxing President’s Day weekend.
